Byron bay turning winter woes into winter wellness – Where to go and what to do this winter

This year, we’re all doing winter a bit differently. As the cold air signals the winter season and COVID19 keeps many of us local, Aussies are left merely dreaming of a warm European summer. But, what if we told you it doesn’t have to be this way? As restrictions ease across many parts of Australia and much loved local hotspots re-open their doors – it’s the perfect time to head to Byron Bay for a warmer, winter wellness escape.

ABOUT BYRON BAY

Byron is home to a collection of stunning beaches and sprawling hinterland. It is a destination known for it’s natural beauty and admired for it’s stylish serenity. A sub-tropical escape with family and friends is the perfect backdrop to enjoy everything from open air dining beneath stars and cool nights by the fire, to long sunny days spent by the beach. As the whales migrate north replacing the hordes of tourists, it’s the perfect time to book your stay next at Byron Bay.

Whale Watching

Do something a little different this winter. Take your family and friends to watch the magnificent humpback whales make their journey from Antartica, past Cape Byron headland, to their breading ground in Far North Queensland.

CAPE BYRON LIGHTHOUSE: This world-renowned landmark offers the best spot to watch the whales pass by, offering unobstructed panoramic ocean views and other possible sightings of Migaloo the white whale, sea turtles and dolphins.

SEA KAYAK: If your feeling adventurous and want to take a closer look, your front row seat to all of the whale watching activities is on the water! Take a kayak tour and see the whales pass from only metres away.

Craft Distilleries

Byron Bay distillery experiences are the hottest new trend. Share a drink of craft beer or gin, in the heart of Byron’s hinterland.

CAPE BYRON DISTILLERY
Tasting sessions & tours are back for 2020! After being named Australia’s most ‘Sustainable Distillery of the Year’, this hidden sub-tropical oasis is the place to be. Cape Byron Distillery is home to Brookie’s Byron Dry Gin – they offer a truly unique rainforest experience, encouraging you to touch, see and smell native rainforest botanicals. You can then enjoy a unique tasing experience and the remainder of your evening on the deck overlooking Brookfarm.

HUSK DISTILLERS
Join Husk for a tour through their distillery, where you will discover the star botanicals of Ink Gin, and taste the full range of spirits. As the only paddock to bottle rum distillery in Australia, Husk is renowned for growing 100% of the sugar cane used in their rum, on their own farm. It certainly goes down on our must-see list of experiences.

Hinterland Adventures

Put your isolation frustrations in the past and enjoy the crisp fresh air and beautiful landscape of Byron’s hinterland. It’s the perfect chance to put your phone away, connect with nature and appreciate your surroundings.

MINYON FALLS: Explore stunning views and an incredible waterfall that plunges 100m down to ground level. This hinterland treasure is part of the World Heritage Nightcap National Park, and offers a 7.5km walking trail through sub-tropical rainforest and hidden swimming holes.

MT. WARNING: This summit trail is another great hinterland hotspot. It’s a slightly more difficult track, making its way through the rainforest terrain for about 9km. Mt Waning stretches an impressive 1,100m high and is located in Wollumbin National Park. It offers you 360 degree views of the ocean as well as a direct view of Gold Coast.

Beach Bliss

Byron Bay’s crystal blue ocean water and white sand beaches first put it on the map. The winter days are warm enough to lay out on the beach and catch some rays, while the evenings drop to a cool temperature – crisp enough for wooly jumpers, bonfires and a glass of red wine.

SUNRISE SPECTACULAR: While many flock to Byron’s lighthouse to catch the ultimate sunrise spot – if your planning to settle in on the sand with a blanket and a piping hot cup of coffee, Tallows beach is the place to be.

SUNSET SERENITY: Gather friends and family and take a trip down to Main Beach. The gold sky with splashes of pink and orange is truly a photo-worthy backdrop.

WINTER WINDS: Cosy Corner needs no introduction – it really is a the cosiest corner of Bryon Bay! Protected from the northern winds, it makes for the perfect beach hideaway.
